july 13, 2015 / Latvian Shipping Company

In order to acquaint themselves with the work of JSC “Latvian Shipping Company” and its subsidiary companies, on Friday, July 3, students of the Latvian Maritime Academy went on an excursion to the Riga Shipyard where in a dry dock the tanker “Ugale” is being repaired.

“Currently we are supervising 20 modern tankers. At the international level our ship crew is considered as professional and experienced. To maintain high crew standards it is important for us that after the graduation from the university the best students choose to work in our company. Besides, it is important that already during the course of studies young people have a full understanding of the work on ships,” emphasizes Head of Administration of LLC “LSC Shipmanagment” Ilze Bērziņa.

In the next study semester JSC “Latvian Shipping Company” is going to grant a special scholarship, and students of ship navigator, engineer or electric engineer programmes will be able to apply for it. The scholarship will be available only for students who have completed and successfully defended practical training on a ship under the technical supervision of LLC “LSC Shipmanagment” – a subsidiary of JSC “Latvian Shipping Company”. It is anticipated that each year the scholarship will be granted to four students. It will amount to 300 euro per month.

Management of JSC “Latvian Shipping Company” express thanks to Captain Dmitry Ovchinnikov, Second Officer Dmitry Alandarenko and Third Officer Edijs Sergejs, who despite the great amount of work found time to introduce the young people with the work on the tanker, as well as told about their sea experience.

Children and young people from the charity organization “Eurika” also participated in the excursion.

JSC “Latvian Shipping Company” (NASDAQ OMX RIGA: LSC1R) is among the biggest vessel owners in the segment of medium and handy size tankers and takes leading positions in terms of the transported amount of petroleum products among similar companies in Northern Europe. The company owns 16 modern vessels employing more than 500 professional and high-skilled seamen from Latvia. The average age of the LK fleet is 7 years. All of the vessels have received ISM (International Safety Management) certificates.
