The Latvian Olympic Calendar of 2010

The year 2010 has arrived under the sign of the XXI Winter Olympic Games – from February 12th to 28th in the Canadian city of Vancouver, the Games will draw the fastest, strongest and most agile athletes in the world. In seven different winter sports events at the Olympic Games, the best of the best from Latvia will also be competing!

However, on the pages of this calendar, we meet Latvia’s Olympians not in their bright and wintery parade outfits, but rather in the harsh but at the same time beautiful training process in the heat of summer, in the rain, on the seashore, in the waves of a lake and on the stadium track. Joint stock company Ventspils nafta in close cooperation with the Latvian Olympic Committee has put together an Olympic calendar to support, motivate and acquaint the public with Latvia’s Olympians. It is a gift to all athletes, supporters and fans!

In the process of creation of the calendar, we got to know Latvia’s athletes better and found them to be talented and open to crazy ideas. The photographs are soulful; they reflect our athletes’ joy, enthusiasm, intelligence, elegance and determination in training for the Olympic Games. Perhaps not all of these athletes will compete in Vancouver, because fortune also plays a great role in sports, but they all deserve to be there and take part!

We expect that the 2010 Olympic calendar will be a striking challenge full of inspiration for the new generation to seek and find the most appropriate manner of athletic expression, because, as can be seen, sport stands out with admirable creativity and diversity!

Canada will be welcoming the Olympic family for the third time. To date Canada has been a favourable place for achieving Olympic heights among Latvian athletes. Six Olympic medals made their way back to Latvia from the Olympic Games in Montreal in 1976, and five from snow-covered Calgary in 1988. Thus we hope very much that in the land of the maple leaf, fortune will be just as kind to our Olympians as in the past!

We wish the Latvian Olympic team a successful performance! And to all of us together – a strong, healthy and athletic country where everyone takes part and wins!
